Barbara has keynoted conferences world- wide. She has given more than a hundred presentations on civilization building. She began in the early 80's giving presentations at libraries and public school about the importance of healthy nutrition for a healthy mind. After being a citizen diplomat to the Soviet Union, in 1986 Barbara made over twenty-five presentations to churches, rotary clubs and schools. In 1988 she was the speaker for her team that partnered with the local people for building the Seattle/Tashkent Peace Park in the Soviet Union. In 1993 she won a Class Act award in Seattle, Washington and was televised as she spoke about love radiating from an open compassionate heart, as being one of the most important qualities of a teacher.

In 1999 Barbara was honored as a Teacher of the Year by President Clinton and was the keynote speaker for Education Day in the Northern Mariana Islands. In 2004 Barbara became Director of Educational Innovation for the Stuart C. Dodd Institute for Social Innovation. She has made presentations on education and civilization building to PTAs, educators and community groups, including speaking for three years at the Citizenship, Moral Education, and Civilization Building Conference in Seattle, Washington. She has spoken at the international World Future Society and the international Creative Problem Solving Institute and Creative Education Foundation. In 2005 she will be one of four co-leaders for a Creative Education "Beacons and Search Lights" immersion program.

Barbara Gilles has addressed a whole range of audiences and has been invited to be the keynote speaker for the Civilization Building Conference in Wisconsin in March 2006. She has made multiple presentations using the Fast Forum technique for symbolic dialogue and the Many to Many Communication's Project for 6th graders through college students around the world. Learning to dialogue at a level above politics is part of the civilization building process using the State of the Union. This can be seen at the Forum Foundation.
